When François suffered multiple injuries from a snowmobile accident in 2001, he knew his life would change forever. After fracturing both legs and knees, he was left with a complete foot drop on one side. Over the years, he tried various ankle and foot orthosis (AFOs), but couldn’t find the one that would allow him to get his life back. That’s how Turbomed was born.

François and Stephane, the founders of Turbomed Orthotics, have designed the Xtern, an orthosis that allows complete mobility and little to no activity restrictions. Completely affixed outside the shoe – and transferrable to almost any shoe, no less – the Xtern is a true game changer for patients suffering from various foot afflictions such as drop foot, dorsiflexion weakness, peroneal nerve injury, idiopathic Toe-walking, Charcot Marie Tooth syndrome (CMT), injuries from strokes (CVAs) Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Cerebral Palsy (CP), Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) and many more.

The Xterns’ thermoplastic frame makes it extremely lightweight, but also adjustable and adaptable to any conditions, no matter how harsh. It’s symmetrical design fits both feet, and can be affixed onto almost any shoe, from sandals and dress shoes to hiking boots, ski boots, winter boots and even football cleats.

This AFO can be assembled in under 10 minutes, and can be combined with complementary accessories like an extension stopper block or an ankle stabilization strap depending on the patient’s needs. It’s also available in various sizes, as well as a pediatric format that can grow up to two shoe sizes larger along with the child.

Turbomed ships worldwide and has distributors in over 26 countries (and counting!). Turbomed is distributed by Cascade in the United States in more than 3000 O&P clinics.
