A common impairment following stroke is called hemiparesis or one-sided (“hemi”) weakness (“paresis). Hemiparesis affects about 8 out of 10 stroke survivors, causing weakness or the inability to move one side of the body. One-sided weakness can affect your arms, hands, legs and facial muscles. Individuals with hemiparesis may have trouble performing everyday activities such as eating, dressing, and using the bathroom. Rehabilitation techniques, such as strengthening exercises, can help with speeding up your recovery.
Listed below are 10 exercise products that can help improve your strength following stroke.
The Cando Digi-Extend is a unique therapy device that can isolate the extension of all five fingers and each of the individual finger joints. The product strengthens the intrinsic and extrinsic muscle groups to maximize extensor tendon gliding, joint motion, coordination and muscle function in the hand and forearm. Patients can easily change the resistance levels and vary their hand positions for specific exercises to help maximize the exercise goals and prevent injury. It can also be used for finger adduction, abduction, blocking and flexion exercises. The package includes an illustrated pamphlet and the following latex-free elastic bands: 5 tan (XX-light), 4 yellow (X-light), 3 red (light) and 2 green (medium).
Rolyan Ultigrip Hand Exerciser provides correct finger placement with support, comfort and added control. The ergonomic palm bar design correctly places and locks device in your hand, distributes pressure evenly and prevents thumb movement due to centrally located notch which assits with 2 Point Pinch, 3 Point Pinch and Finger Tip Flexion exercises. The hand exerciser with the foam roller helps Gross Grasp exercises be performed more effectiveley by allowing the hand to squeeze into a tight fist comfortably. Love Handles RX are patented elliptical arms that easily attach to any chair or wheelchair for upper-extremity rehabilitation and cardiovascular fitness from a seated position. Love Handles RX include adjustable resistance up to 8lbs. and a high energy/low impact fitness DVD.
The Pendulum Stepper is a light, mobile, self-assisted trainer of reciprocal stepping. Unlike a bicycle, the Pendulum Stepper more closely mimics the stepping motion used in walking. The Pendulum Stepper allows for active assist from the user’s arms by using the arm extensors. Elastic resistance may be gradually added to increase the level of difficulty and, at the same time, ease the return motion. It can be used from a either a chair or wheelchair and from a supine position for those unable sit up.
The SaeboGlide was specifically designed to exercise the affected arm. The SaeboGlide offers a way to exercise the affected arm by using the gliding sleeve. Following placement of the hand onto the gliding sleeve, the distal support will allow the stroke survivor to perform various controlled upper extremity exercises at his or her appropriate strength level.
The Biodex Sit2Stand Trainer helps the therapist guide patients through the seated to standing motions, in a safe environment. By repeating the motions, a patient builds both lower- and upper-body muscular strength and endurance, improves flexibility and ultimately maintains/gains independence.
The UE Ranger is designed specifically for rehab professionals and their patients recovering from limitations of movement associated with pain, weakness, decreased range of motion and the functional losses associated with such impedances.
This rehab tool is designed to securely support an un-gripped hand and promote a relaxed upper extremity.
The molded plastic palm is grooved to comfortably receive a left or right hand and is compatible with a wide range of hand sizes. Coupled with articulating rubber joints, the hand support and base plate supports multi-plane mobility with cushioned end ranges in both weight bearing and non-weight bearing applications.
